Chief Judge William C. McConico presides over the Court and oversees 28 judges and 6 magistrates. Court Administrator LaWanda Crosby provides daily oversight for the non-judicial functions of the Court and approximately 300 staff.
The 36th District Court is dedicated to administering justice in an equitable, impartial, and timely manner in accordance with the rule of law.
The 36th District Court is the largest district court in the state of Michigan and one of the busiest courts in the United States. More people have contact with the district court than any other court. For this reason, it is often referred to as the "People's Court".

36th District Court Launches Amnesty Program: Waiving Late Fees, Penalties, and Warrant Costs

DETROIT, MI – March 2, 2026 – The 36th District Court is pleased to announce the launch of a Courtwide Amnesty Program running from March 9 through April 2, 2026. During this period, all late fees, penalties, and warrant costs will be fully waived upon payment of the original fines and costs owed.

The amnesty program applies to all adjudicated cases with assessed fines and costs, with the exception of driver’s license reinstatement fees.

Chief Judge William C. McConico stated, “This amnesty program provides individuals with a meaningful opportunity to resolve outstanding court debt without the added burden of late fees and warrant costs. Our goal is to remove financial barriers and help members of our community move forward. The Court’s staff is fully committed to assisting participants and ensuring the success of this program.”
